Tianshuihai Gr
Type Locality and Naming
Karakorum (SW corner of Xinjiang). The Tianshuihai Gr was named by Li Changhe and Zhang Zhide in 1985. The type locality is Tianshendaban, upstream of Kalakax River, Xinjiang Weiwuerzhu Zizhiqu (Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region).
Synonym: (甜水海群)
Lithology and Thickness
Lower part consists of grey, grey-brown, thin-to medium-bedded sandstone, siltstone and tuffaceous sandstone with minor quartzite. Middle part is an uneven interbedding of metamorphosed feldspar sandstone, locally with calcareous siltstone. Upper part is composed of grey, medium-bedded metamorphosed calcareous sandstone and phyllite, intercalated with dark-grey siliceous limestone. The apparent thickness varies from 1000 to 1500 m.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
The bottom of the group is not seen.
Upper contact
The upper part of the group is unconformably overlain directly by the Dongguashan Fm of Middle Ordovician.
Regional extent
Karakorum (SW corner of Xinjiang). The Tianshuihai Group is distributed mainly upstream of Yarkant River and Karakax River, from Tianshendaban to Tielongtan area.

Fossils
The upper part of the group contains stromatolites such as Litia f., Stratifera f., Xiajingella f. A Baicalia f. is also seen in the upper part in Tianshihai Quarry.
